Individual Therapy for Men with

Gabriel Trees, MA

A Man’s approach to Therapy

Do any of these sound like you?

  • You are looking for effective tools for communication.

  • You have been reluctant to do therapy in the past and would prefer to work with someone who offers a male perspective.

  • You are feeling isolated, anxious, or depressed and don’t know where to start.

  • You are navigating some big life transitions, and don’t have male friends you feel comfortable talking with about deeper challenges.

  • Your partner wants to go to therapy, but you’ve had negative experiences in the past, or just aren’t sure if its for you.

  • You are overwhelmed with work, relationship, or parenting demands.

  • You want a therapist who understands and appreciates a wide range of attitudes and values.

I’m here to offer straight-forward guidance and support.

These days understanding what it means “to be a man” can be full of mixed messages. Typically, these "rules" of masculinity come from the environments men developed in - but were internalized so young that it can seem like they are the natural or correct way. For many, conforming to these expectations can lead to confusion and disappointment. Let’s get real about your concerns and move forward with finding ways to make the changes you are seeking.

By using evidence-based therapy approaches, such as EFT and Strength-Centered therapy, I can help you improve the quality of your life.

About Gabriel

Hello, I’m Gabriel Trees, Men’s Specialty and Relationship Therapist. Portland, OR has been my home for the last 25 years, but I also spent formative years in New England and Georgia. This has resulted in me adopting characteristics from all three: the straight-forwardness of NE, the conscientiousness of the South, and the openness and flexibility of the PNW.

Besides being a parent, husband, and friend, I also have extensive experience as a caretaker of children. Relationships in general have always held my attention and curiosity. Having the privilege of going to graduate school to become a therapist has been both a humbling and ever-inspiring focus of my life.

As someone who was in the workforce for 20+ years before entering higher education, I bring to my work the experiences of being an “unskilled” entry-level worker, small business owner, and everything in between.

When I’m not working, I love to have a laugh with my friends and family. Making people laugh is one of the most satisfying and nourishing things I get to do. Humor has always been an essential ingredient for my well being.

Music, also, has been my consistent companion and teacher for as long as I can remember. Performing, writing, and recording music continue to be an integral part of my life. For me, everything is a matter of rhythm and harmony, and the therapy room is no exception.

My Approach and Influence

Solution-Focused

Even the worst problems can be improved upon in some way. Let’s work together to find the areas where things are working and expand them. Like a good workout, consistent incremental improvements are what creates significant long-lasting change.

Strength-Centered

Strength-Based Therapy focuses on helping you identify and build upon the strengths, capabilities, and resourcefulness you already possess, rather than your vulnerabilities. Let’s support you in overcoming obstacles and greatly improve your overall well-being.

Emotionally-Focused
(EFT)

Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT) is founded on the evidence that emotions are not accessories to human experience but organizing principles of our lives. By being able to more fully experience your emotional range, we can help you express yourself in ways that align with your values - and help you connect more deeply with others.

Attachment Theory

Attachment Theory is a well-researched approach to therapy. The attachment styles we develop early in life can have a profound impact on the way we relate to others in adulthood. Awareness and appreciation of this has been shown to lead to a greater understanding and better outcomes in life. Let’s work towards creating better relationships with yourself and others.
